Frequently Asked Questions
What is the default speed limit in Australia?
The default speed limit in built-up areas across Australia is 50 km/h unless a different limit is posted. School zones are 40 km/h in most states (25 km/h in South Australia). The default open road limit is 100 km/h nationally, except in the Northern Territory where some roads allow 130 km/h.
How do I convert my overseas licence to an Australian licence?
The process depends on your country and state. UK and New Zealand full licence holders can convert directly with no test required in most states. Most other countries require both a road rules knowledge test and a practical driving test. You can generally drive on your overseas licence for up to 3 months after establishing residency. A NAATI-certified translation is required if your licence is not in English.
Can demerit points be transferred in Australia?
No. Demerit points in Australia are permanently attached to the individual licence holder and cannot be transferred to another person. Attempting to do so is considered fraud and carries serious criminal penalties including fines and potential imprisonment.
What is the BAC limit for drivers in Australia?
Full licence holders must maintain a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) below 0.05. Learner and provisional (P-plate) drivers must have zero BAC (0.00). Heavy vehicle drivers (vehicles over 4.5 tonnes GVM) and bus drivers must also maintain zero BAC at all times regardless of their licence type.
How many questions are in the Australian driving test?
The number of questions varies by state: NSW has 45 questions (pass: 38), VIC has 32 questions (pass: 28), QLD has 30 questions (pass: 25), WA has 30 questions (pass: 24), SA has 45 questions (pass: 41), TAS has 25 questions (pass: 20), ACT has 30 questions (pass: 25), and NT has 30 questions (pass: 24).
